Procedure and How it Works for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

The Treatment Process

IUI can be performed without medications, or with a variety of medications that help to develop one or more eggs. The insemination occurs around day 14 of a woman’s cycle and deposits sperm within the uterus. This increases the number and distance of sperm that must swim to reach the egg and increases the chance of natural conception through IVF.

IVF is a procedure that involves taking medications for approximately 10 days to produce large numbers of eggs. After many eggs have been developed, the eggs are taken from their ovaries. The eggs are fertilized in a laboratory. After growing for a few more days in the laboratory, the embryo is returned to the woman’s body.

Types of IVF

Understanding that IVF is a generic term used to describe procedures where fertilization occurs outside of the body is the best way to see the various types of IVF. Many factors can make a difference in IVF. These include medications, fertilization, embryo processing, and the location where fertilization occurs. You can combine different types.

Conventional IVF–

Fertilization Technique: This was the first method of fertilization. To fertilize an egg by self-employed penetration, sperm are placed into a petri dish.

Fertilization Technique: This is an IVF technique that uses sperm loaded in a microneedle to inject directly into the egg.

Mini IVF–

Medication Protocol: This is an IVF procedure that uses a lower medication protocol to recruit fewer eggs, but hopefully more.

Natural IVF–

Medication Protocol – An IVF cycle where no medication is used to produce extra eggs. You can only retrieve one egg (or, in rare cases, two).

Embryo Processing: Transferring a frozen embryo from an IVF cycle.

Fertilization location is a fertilization option where sperm or eggs are placed in a thumb-sized medical device that can be inserted into the vagina to fertilize and encourage early development. It is the same as traditional fertilization, but in a vaginal device rather than in an embryology laboratory.

Reciprocal Infertility

Reciprocal infertility is an IVF option that lesbians and trans people use to connect to their babies. The eggs of one partner are used and the baby is carried by the other.

IVF Process:

No matter what type of IVF you are having, the majority can be broken down into a handful of key steps.

Treatment Preparation –

Similar to IUI you can give your fertility a boost by changing the diet and adding beneficial supplements or medication to your body. You can also use holistic therapies to improve your chances of a successful IVF treatment.

Stimulation medications for ovarian stimulation –

These drugs will increase the quality and quantity of your eggs. This happens between days 2 and 4 and lasts for approximately ten days. You will be closely monitored throughout this period to monitor your uterine lining and follicular development as well as hormone levels. A trigger medication is administered to fully mature the eggs once the follicles have reached the optimal size.

Sperm collection and egg retrieval –

The trigger shot is 35 hours later. The procedure takes between 5-10 minutes and is performed under light anesthesia. A tiny, hollow needle is used to retrieve the eggs. It is inserted through the vaginal wall and aimed at an ovary. The fluid containing the eggs is then drained and taken to the IVF laboratory. They will be fertilized or developed. The sperm is taken the same day and ejaculated into a sterile container. It can then be frozen or obtained from a donor. The sperm is then washed and placed in a solution that is similar to the fallopian tubes. Finally, fertilization can be done.

The laboratory–

When the eggs are fertilized in an embryologist’s lab. After they are fertilized, they will be grown for 3-5 days before they can be transferred to the woman’s uterus. The embryos can be genetically screened before they are allowed to be transferred into the woman’s uterus.

Embryo Transfer–

At this stage, 1-2 embryos can be gently placed in the woman’s uterus via a small catheter. Freeze any unutilized embryos for future use.

After transfer, you will likely be taking progesterone or estrogen to increase implantation and pregnancy rates. A blood test for pregnancy will be positive within 10-14 days if the transfer is successful. Ultrasounds are used to confirm the implantation site and check for a heartbeat. The good news is that if a heartbeat has been detected, there is a 90% to 95% chance of live birth.
