What Are The Worst Air Quality Cities In India?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently released its latest study on the most polluted cities in the world. The list, which includes 2028 cities in 100 countries, has been prepared using information from satellite imagery and air quality monitoring stations and is based on the average concentration of fine particulate matter PM 2.5.

PM 2.5 refers to particles that are less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter and can penetrate into the lungs and cardiovascular system. According to WHO guidelines, PM 2.5 should not exceed 10 micrograms per cubic metre (μg/m3) as an annual mean value – anything above that level is considered unsafe for human health.

The data reveals that Gurugram led the list of most polluted cities in India 2022 with its satellite towns Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Noida, and Bhiwadi in the top six worst-affected cities. The city has seen a 50% rise in PM 2.5 levels over the last three years due to rapid industrialisation and construction activities around it as well as vehicular emissions from heavy traffic congestion on NH-8 which passes through it.

PM2.5 is the fine inhalable particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 micrometres. The particulate matter that is 2.5 micrometres or smaller and settles in the lungs in human beings is particularly dangerous, because these particles can enter the bloodstream and affect other organs like the heart and brain. Fine PM is responsible for the bulk of air pollution-related health impacts in cities around the world, including premature deaths due to cardiopulmonary disease and respiratory ailments among people with existing conditions.

New Delhi, World’s Most Polluted Capital City

A study conducted by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), a non-governmental organization, found that in 2021, Delhi was followed by Dhaka (Bangladesh), N’Djamena (Chad), Dushanbe (Tajikistan), Muscat (Oman) and Kathmandu (Nepal). All six capital cities reported an average annual PM2.5 concentration above 50 µg/m3.

Pollution In Central And South Asia

According to the report, India and Pakistan generally experience the worst air quality in this region, with 48 per cent and 67 per cent respectively of cities with PM2.5 concentrations greater than ten times the 2021 WHO air quality guideline level.

A report on the worst air quality in Asia shows that more than 67 percent of regions in India and Pakistan were above the WHO guideline levels for PM 2.5, which are small particles capable of travelling deep into the lungs and causing respiratory damage. The PM 2.5 concentration level is only less than 10 times the WHO guideline level.

No Cities In India Met The WHO Air Quality Guideline

The recent Environmental Performance Index by Yale University revealed that India was home to 11 of the 15 most polluted cities in Central and South Asia in 2021. No cities in India met the WHO air quality guideline of 5 µg/m3. In fact, in 2021, 48 per cent of India’s cities exceeded 50 µg/m3, or more than 10 times the WHO guideline.
