Green Day is an American rock band formed in 1986 by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt. For much of the band’s career, they have been a trio with drummer Tré Cool, who replaced John Kiffmeyer in 1990 prior to the recording of the band’s second studio album, Kerplunk (1991). Touring extensively for the next two years, the band gained a grassroots fanbase through constant gigging. This culminated with the band’s breakthrough album, Dookie (1994), which was certified diamond in the United States. Green Day was widely credited with reviving mainstream interest in punk rock, pop punk and alternative rock. They have sold over 85 million records worldwide.

In 2012, they were ranked No. 91 in Rolling Stone’s “The Greatest Artists of All Time” list. In the same year, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a part of their first year of eligibility, making Green Day the fourth punk band to be inducted, after the Ramones, the Clash and Blondie.
